Population development of the European red mite, Panonychus ulmi KOCH, was studied in the field on 16 Vitis vinifera cultivars and 5 interspecific crosses. Population frequency could considerably vary between cultivars.A significant positive correlation existed between the density of prostrate (downy) hairs on the lower leaf surface and the. population frequency of P. ulmi. The degree of leaf damage due to feeding of mites was visually estimated according to the extent of leaf discoloration (bronzing). 5 classes of damage were distinguished and scored by the indices 1 (normal colour), 3, 5, 7 and 9 (most advanced discoloration).
Among the grapevine genotypes examined, a significant positive correlation between the degree of leaf damage and the population frequency of P. ulmi was stated toward the onset of grape maturity but not earlier in the growing season. Similarly, a positive correlation between density of prostrate hairs and discoloration of infested leaves was observed only later in the growing season.
Perspectives of breeding grapevine cultivars which are tolerant to attack by P. ulmi are discussed.
