Abstract

In Blau, der Farbe der Ruhe und Zufriedenheit, zusammen mit dem kraftvollen Rot der Lebensfreude und Weiß als Farbe der Unschuld und Sauberkeit muss ein reizvoller Beweggrund, eine hohe Attraktivität liegen, so dass diese Farbenkombination in vielen Lebensbereichen gewählt wird, Harmonie und Verlässlichkeit ausstrahlend. Der starke Dualismus Rot gegen Weiß wird durch das Blau gemildert.

Mit der Farbenkombination der blauen Blüten von Centaurea cyanus, der roten Blüten von Papaver rhoeas oder P. dubium und der weißen Blüten von Matricaria recutita bzw. Tripleurospermum inodorum wird dieses 3-Klang-Thema vielfältig aufgegriffen, in Büchern, nicht nur naturkundlichen, auf Gemälden, im Kunstgewerbe, auch auf Gebrauchsgegenständen und in der Werbung auf Verpackungen von Lebensmitteln, hier vermutlich oft unterschwellig zum Kauf anreizend wirksam.

Weeds with blue flowers, red and white: Symbols for naturalness of products as well as subjects for art objects

The symbolism of the colours blue, red and white is discussed. Blue, the colour of quiet and contentment, together with the powerful red, indicating a zest for life, and white, the colour of innocence and purity, give a charming and attractive theme and these colour combinations appear commonly. The strong contrast of red against white is moderated by blue. 

There are three remarkable weeds with blue flowers (Centaurea cyanus), red (Papaver rhoeas) and white (Matricaria recutita). Some examples from many years' collection of different objects with these species alone or, more impressively, all 3 species together are shown (books - not only of natural history, pictures of still lives, yoghurt beakers, milk tubs, packagings of bread or rolls or margarine, porcelain cups and saucers, bunches of artificial flowers, artificial poppy flowers for the annual Remembrance Day in countries of the British Commonwealth).
