Sensors in Crop Production – Foreword
The non-destructive detection of the development status of vegetation is possible with the help of online sensors in the field. More and more manufacturers now offer a variety of different systems that have been developed primarily for the site-specific fertilization. Best known are the so-called “nitrogen-sensors” that are supposed to measure the nutritional status of the plants and then adjust the fertilization needs. In addition to the supply of nutrients, there are still a number of other potential applications for sensing in crop production.
Within the 1st Julius Kühn-Symposium “Sensors in crop production”, which was held in Quedlinburg on the 12th of June in 2012, experts presented the technical background and functions of various sensor technologies and discussed the possibilities and limitations of this technology. This special issue comprises the presented talks in a written form.
