Both inten sity and speed of the stilbene production of Vitis leaves after stimulation with inducing agents is corre lated with their res istance to growth of Botrytis mycelium.Susceptibility to Botrytis and stilbene production are markedly influenced by different factors like age of leaves and time of sampling.
The most suitable test conditions were obtained by using young leaves (4th to 7th leaves from the top) during June and July, and by evaluating the results of a 6 d incubation (after infection with Botrytis) and an incubation of 48 h after induction of stilbene synthesis.
The best corre lations between susceptibility of leaves vs. berries resulted from comparisons of leaves as described above to be rries with a sugar content of at least 50 °0echsle.
The results indicate that stilbene induction can be used as a crude screening test for varieties resistant to B. cinerea in seedling populations of interspecific crossings.
