Development of the embryo sac and fertilization in grapevine
The development of embryo sacs has been described. At the beginning of flowering they consist of two synergids, the egg cell and the secondary embryo sac nucleus. Investigations with the cvs. Gewürztraminer, Weisser Burgunder and a hybrid Müller-Thurgau x V. armata showed equal volumes of the nuclei of the egg cells at the beginning of flowering. 24 h thereafter, the volume of the egg cell nuclei was 1.53 times enlarged in the pollinated ovaries. This enlargement can be explained by the· duplication of the DNA content which is due to fertilization. An increase of the volume (1.76 times) was also observed in the secondary embryo sac nuclei of the pollinated ovaries. On the other hand, the ovaries which were not pollinated showed no enlargement of the volume of the egg cell nuclei and the secondary embryo sac nuclei. 4 d after the beginning of flowering, the unfertilized egg cells began to degenerate. In consideration of the temperatures during the day when flowering began, fertilizatlon occurred 12-24 h after the opening of the flowers.
