An electro-mechanical method of grape harvesting
Electro-mechanical detaching of grapes is a possible way of harvesting, besides mechanico-static, mechanico-dynamic and pneumatic techniques.
The conditions of conductivity in grapevines allow the detaching of grapes by electro-mechanical means. At harvesttime, the peduncle presents a higher electric resistance than the o.ther parts of the plant. This difference in resistance forms the base for realizing the process of detaching. When conducting a current of higher voltage over the grape through the peduncle and deriving it over the shoot, the peduncle blows as a result of its resistance related to length and the grape is detached without injury. The process of detaching extends over an adequate short period. Thus, the electro-mechanical method of detaching can be realized in principle.
However, there are difficulties as to the practical application of this method. In order to introduce the current into the grape, this has to hang down freely from the shoot and to be well accessible to the electrode. For this purpose, pergola training is most favourable. The main problem of realizing this method is the heavy damage of parts of the shoot caused by the current when passing through at high voltage and for more than l s. When applying this method, it has to be observed that the parts of the plant designed for pruning in the following year remain uninjured. This demands expensive training measures which questions the economy of this harvesting technique.
On the whole, the investigations have shown that a practical use of the electromechanical harvesting method may be possible, but decisive advances against the other harvesting techniques are not recognizable at present.
