Some aspects of frost hardiness tests during model experiments in climatic controlled chambers
In order to avoid misinterpretation of early diagnostic results at breeding for cold hardiness, the winter hardiness of vines should not be considered as a static feature, but as a dynamically developing means of behaviour. The influence of the incidents during the vegetation period on the development - within the genetically limited frontiers - are at least as important as the hardening phase and the frost effect itself.
From numerous cold hardiness investigations, the following was shown:
- The changes in frost hardiness which reveal themselves during dormancy,
- the effect of the ecological conditions of the vegetation period.
The tables and illustrations give data (ad 1) on the changes in the cold hardiness from "field" and "stored" samples during the hibernation, the differences within the same cultivar in several years, and the differences in the amount and the trend of cold tolerance specific to each cultivar; and also (ad 2) on the differences within the same cultivar due to different locations, the influence of nutrition and yield, and finally the influence of methods of cultivation and of the micro climate.
Taking into account the former life of the vines and using an exact, precisely drawn-up frosting programme in climatic controlled chambers, the varieties can be characterised according to their genetical features.
