The Action Programme Ambrosia in Germany – State of the art and future prospects
Common ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia) originally from North America occurs as an alien species in several European countries. In Germany it has spread only recently. Because of its negative impact on agriculture and human health, further spread is undesired. At the Julius Kühn-Institute, Federal Research Centre for Cultivated Plants an “Interdisciplinary working group Ambrosia” has launched an Action Programme Ambrosia early in 2007 in order to prevent further spread of this alien plant. First results are presented: Monitoring in several Federal States of Germany has shown that most stands of this plant are small. Larger stands are mostly found in Southern Germany and in Brandenburg. Management and control have taken place and led to the destruction of many ragweed plants. In order to successfully halt the spread of the species, however, the action programme has to become more efficient and has to be followed in all Federal States.
