Abstract

Abstract
The aim of the project is the long-term preservation and utilisation of the only indigenous wild apple species (Malus sylvestris (L.) Mill.) of Germany in its natural environment (‘in situ’). The East Ore Mountains are one of the few areas with a bigger population of the crab apple. Nevertheless, the existence of Malus sylvestris is endangered. Particularly the intensive agriculture decimates the crab apple population more and more. Furthermore, often hybridisation occurs with the domesticated apple, therefore ‚hybrids’ are widespread in addition to the ‚pure’ wild apple trees. The crab apple trees in the East Ore Mountains were mapped with GPS using the Gauß-Krueger coordinates. Evaluation descriptors with a scoring scale were defined to differentiate ‘crab apple’ or ‘hybrid’. In addition genetic investigations were carried out with selected trees to classify the trees unambiguously as ‚pure’ or‚ hybrid’.
