Abstract

Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Hans-Jürgen Jäger, former director of the Institute of Plant Ecology at the Justus-Liebig-Universität in Gießen, Germany, passed away at the age of 71 on 18th of August 2013. Hans-Jürgen Jäger received his PhD in plant ecology at the Justus Liebig University Gießen in 1971. He did research as a post-doc and assistant professor (Dozent) at the Institute of Plant Ecology in Gießen and finished his habilitation in 1979. In 1983 he became director of the Institute of Production- and Ecotoxicology at the former Federal Research Centre of Agriculture (FAL) in Braunschweig, Germany. In 1989 he went back to the University of Gießen and took over the position of the chair of Plant Ecology at the institute of Plant Ecology. He was director of this institute until his retirement in 2007. Throughout his career in Gießen and Braunschweig, Hans-Jürgen Jäger´s research interests were in experimental plant ecology related to environmental problems of biogeochemistry, the impact of pollutants, ecotoxicology and global climate change issues. For more than 20 years from 1983 – 2007, he was Editor in Chief of the scientific journal “Journal of Applied Botany and Food – Angewandte Botanik” (formerly “Angewandte Botanik”) published by the German Society of Applied Botany (Gesellschaft für Angewandte Botanik e.V.).
