Optical sensors in agriculture: Principles and concepts
Keywords:
Precision agriculture, remote sensing, optical sensorsAbstract
Online sensors for the detection of spatially varying crop stands have gained importance in agricultural practices, mainly for site specific fertilisation.
Commonly, values of 2–3 spectral channels are used to calculate vegetation indices. These are then correlated with crop parameters such as biomass. Meanwhile, high quality continuous reflectance spectra can be measured online allowing improving prediction models and opening up new challenges for data analysis.
The physical principles, used vegetation indices, as well as the potentials and risks of agriculturally used optical sensors are presented and discussed.
