Abstract

The ‘National Action Plan for sustainable use of pesticides’ by the Federal Government, 2013 (National Action Plan/NAP) describes objectives, based on the status quo in stored product protection, followed by particular differentiated measures. Part of the NAP are sector specific guidelines for integrated pest management also covering the usage in stored product protection and an action plan to improve the situation in stored product protection.

Regarding consumer, user and environmental protection there is no current hazard or lack of stored product protection products. Pesticides are available for each of the very different uses in storage but the number of pesticides and their active substances is small and therefore it could occur a critical resistance risk. For this reason and considering the lack of sufficient data on the abundance and on losses due to stored product pests as well as the need for integrated pest management there is a need for an action plan to improve the situation in stored product protection. Measures in storage affect different sectors from agriculture to trade, so all actors have to be involved to get harmonized and accepted standards.
