In summer 2017, a sudden death of apple trees was observed only three months after planting. The trees showed a pronounced collar rot, from which fungi identified as Athelia rolfsii (Curzi) C. C. Tu & Kimbr. (anamorph: Sclerotium rolfsii Sacc.) were isolated. A pathogenicity test was performed on nine Malus rootstock cultivars. Collar rot developed in trees that were inoculated into wounds with A. rolfsii, but not in uninjured or mock inoculated control plants. A. rolfsii was re-isolated from rots fulfilling Koch’s postulates.
