The EU fertilizer ordinance 2003 defines eight different procedures for the evaluation of fertilizer P solubility. The applicability of the procedures depends on the origin and quality of the P fertilizer in question. However, the informational value of such chemical extraction procedures with regard to the real plant availability of the fertilizer is limited, since this type of static methods cannot mirror the dynamic dissolution processes taking place in the soil. Nevertheless, these procedures should allow for a comparative evaluation of the potential solubility of different fertilizers which enables farmers to better adjust their fertilizer dressings and minimize any surplus in their P balance. In view of the aim of maximizing the utilization of a P fertilizer its effective portion is estimated best by its solubility in water or ammonium citrate.
