The agronomic value of modern faba bean cultivars is higher than indicated by their current acreage. Hybrid breeding is not feasible, because the CSM systems are not applicable. Yet, breeding of synthetic cultivars turned out to be a successful concept. The seed protein content could be genetically increased, alas, economic incentives to do so are missing. Presently the path is going to be paved for a marker-assisted improvement of resistance against Ascochyta and Uromyces. Furthermore, DNA markers for absence of tannins and low levels of vicine were identified, and donors for further disease resistances and for an increased frost tolerance (winter beans) were identified.
