During the last decade the interest in the use of essential oils in different areas of plant protection has increased considerably. This is documented by the permanently increasing amount of scientific literature. In the following review, the actual research on the effect and potential use of essential oils and their main components in plant protection is compiled. After a general introduction, results against the following plant pests are presented: Phytopathogenic bacteria, phytopathogenic fungi, pest insects, mites, nematodes, weeds and snails. Finally, side effects and phytotoxicity of essential oils in plant protection as well as safety issues and environmental effects are discussed.
