Because of its properties as inert gas, carbon dioxide increases to be used for pest control. Today it is often preferred against phosphine and sulfuryl fluoride. The lethal effect is based on deficiency of oxygen when the air is replaced by this gas as well as by the increase of acidity in the cell liquids of treated organisms. On one side it is categorized as safe, on the other hand a registration is required for use as pest control agent according either to the Plant Protection Law or the Biocidal Directive. Following the general rule for the minimization of the use of toxic substances as much as possible, it should be preferred as pest control agent against toxic substances despite its possible higher prize.
