Breeding of cup plant (Silphium perfoliatum L.) is at the starting point. Possible breeding traits, the basics of pollination and fertilization and possible breeding strategies are taken into consideration. A large variability exists in the tested accessions. Traits of plant habit, growing and harvesting technologies can be treated effectively. For the determination of energetic quality quick and low budget methods do not exist yet. Applicability of NIRS as a quick and cheap analytical method will be investigated. A method for in-vitro propagation of valuable individual plants will be developed.
